Island fever tends to hit when you realize that every trip to the mainland is going to be a long flight. It hits when you realize you can’t just drive to another state or hop in the car for a weekend getaway. But many locals manage it by exploring different parts of the island or planning the occasional trip to other islands or the mainland.
Although many people worry about how they’ll handle island fever, I’ve personally never experienced it. Hawai‘i is so diverse, even on the same island, you can drive for hours and feel like you’re in a totally different climate and vibe. I’ve known people who haven’t visited family on the North Shore in years because it’s “too far.”
Yes, Prime shipping exists, but don’t expect 2-day delivery every time. Groceries, packages, services… everything moves a little slower. You’ll get used to planning ahead or waiting just a bit longer for things you once took for granted.
Forget granite countertops and brand-new builds. Many homes in Hawai‘i are decades old, modest in size, and built without AC. And yet, prices are shockingly high. Modifying your expectations is part of the lifestyle shift.
You’ll start to notice the fine print in ads: “Available only in the continental U.S.” or “Not valid in Hawai‘i or Alaska.” Many national companies—like meal delivery services, subscription boxes, or retail promotions—simply don’t include Hawai‘i. From shipping delays to fast food pricing, residents here are left out more often than you’d think.
Personal note: I still remember when Subway advertised $5 footlongs, when in Hawai‘i, they were $6.
There’s less hustle and also fewer distractions. That makes space for more sunsets, more connection, more time to breathe. Your priorities slowly shift away from “more” and toward meaningful.
Living in Hawai‘i full time is a dream for many—but it comes with its own rhythms, realities, and responsibilities. It’s not about escaping the mainland. It’s about stepping into a different pace of life, one rooted in respect, relationships, and a deep connection to place. The more you understand that upfront, the more likely you are to thrive here, not just live here.
